The Limits of Leadership

"It is natural for us to naïvely expect our leaders—be they corporate executives or their increasingly decorative and superfluous adjuncts in government—to be our betters, having been picked for leadership positions by their ability to lead us through difficult and unfamiliar terrain. We expect them to have the mental agility and flexibility to be able to revise their mental maps as the circumstances dictate. We don't expect them to be stupid, and are surprised to find that indeed they are."--Dmitry Orlov

That is some of what Dmitry Orlov has to say about TPTB in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.  He likens the response of BP and our government to the response of the Russian government in the wake of Chernobyl., which is a response of ineptitude many times over.  The whole piece is worth reading; he also wrote one of my favorite books, "Reinventing Collapse", please check that out as well.

Hi Jeff, I got to your blog by taking two "blog steps" to the right (I do that sometimes ;-)from here:
http://earlywarn.blogspot.com/2010/06/comparing-us-and-european-fossil-fuel.html

which was linked to in the comments at Barry Ritholtz's blog here:
http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2010/06/missed-opportunity-bp-gulf-of-mexico-disaster/

I'm just commenting because it seemed you are concerned about the same things that they are and I am AND I liked the serendipity of it all. Anyway, I bookmarked your blog, FWIW.

Dave,

I'm happy that you found my blog, and even happier that you were referred to it from another blog. I tend not to really post to other blogs, because much of the content and the responses really sets the bar high, and there are times when I don't know what I could add that would be meaningful. But people are still able to find my blog, somehow, and I am very appreciative of that.

Thank you for bookmarkng my blog. My blog deals almost exclusively in energy issues, so I am sure that you can find more things I post to be relevant.

Point of clarification, Jeff... I was not referred to your blog from another blog, I just clicked "Next Blog" twice from the blog that I was referred to. IOW, your blog is in a good neighborhood ;-)
Carry on!

Dave,

D'oh! I misunderstood you; I was wondering why I couldn't find a link to my blog after clicking the links that you provided. Well, in any event, it doesn't matter. Thanks again.
